Capital Boulevard morning crawl near Perry Creek Road

Yolanda Frey @deckdoctor · Holly SpringsJun 10, 2026, 11:21 PM

Good morning neighbors! Is anyone else struggling with the commute down Capital Boulevard lately?

It took me almost forty-five minutes just to get from Rolesville down to the I-440 ramp yesterday morning. There seems to be a permanent bottleneck near Perry Creek Road with all the dump trucks pulling out. I feel like I could build a whole new chicken coop in the time I spend sitting in traffic looking at the bumper of a cement mixer.

Does anyone have a secret back road route that actually works, or should I just accept my fate?

Opal, we feel your pain up in Wakefield. It is an absolute parking lot.

We have tried cutting over to Falls of Neuse Road, but honestly, everyone else had the same idea. My morning commute has turned into a lawn-watching expedition. I saw three yards on Litchford Road yesterday that desperately need a pre-emergent treatment. If you do take the side roads, watch out for the school traffic near the high school.

Capital Boulevard has been a struggle since it was called the Downtown Boulevard back in the nineteen seventies. The city kept permitting new retail plazas and car dealerships without once expanding the transit corridor. It is a classic Raleigh mistake that we have been repeating for forty years. I remember when you could drive from Wake Forest to downtown Raleigh in fifteen minutes, but those days are long gone.

Use Highway 96. Longer miles but you actually move.

I got totally lost trying to bypass Capital last week and ended up on some narrow road near the Neuse River. I think I scraped my bumper on a low branch. Is there a trick to navigating that area, or is it always a bottleneck?

Finn, you might have been on old Falls of Neuse. Priya here. The shortcut through the older residential areas is tempting, but the wear and tear on your suspension is rarely worth the five minutes you save.

We bought our home in Boylan Heights specifically to avoid those long north-south commutes. Sometimes paying more to live closer to the city center is the most cost-effective thing you can do for your sanity, even if you have to spend a bit more on maintaining original plaster and trim.

I tried using three different routing apps last week to optimize my commute from Cary over to North Hills. The algorithms just end up sending everyone down the exact same residential streets anyway. The smart tech is actually making the neighborhood traffic worse, not better.

My advice is to keep it simple. Stick to the main road, accept the delay, and find a good podcast.

Owen is right on the money. Our neighborhood Facebook page in Wakefield is full of people complaining about GPS drivers speeding through our cul-de-sacs. Keep them on Capital so my turfgrass stays safe from tire tracks.

Thank you all for the perspective! I think I will stick to Capital and listen to some bluegrass music. My chickens do not mind if I am ten minutes late anyway, as long as their feeder is full when I get home.
