Same night as the arena show, which tells you something about how booked downtown is going to be. Charles Wesley Godwin with Dylan Gossett at Red Hat Amphitheater, Thursday October 1, 7:00, over on South McDowell.

I have seen Godwin twice and both times the crowd sang louder than the PA. Red Hat with the skyline behind the stage is honestly one of the better outdoor rooms in the state.

Two things worth knowing. Red Hat is open air, so watch the radar that afternoon. And the McDowell deck fills early when the convention center has anything going on.

Red Hat was the first show I saw after we moved here and I still bring it up to people back home. Something about the buildings lit up behind the band.

Early October here can still hand you a pop up thunderstorm out of nowhere. They usually hold the show and ride it out, but a thin poncho in your back pocket beats a forty dollar plastic bag at the merch tent.

eleven pines and counting

If you are eating first, get in somewhere by 5:15. The blocks around there turn into a wall of people once both venues let in.

still on the list

Dylan Gossett opening is a real get. My son plays him constantly in the truck.

well and septic, no regrets

Lawn versus reserved question for anyone who has done both there recently. Is the lawn worth it for this kind of show or does the sound get away from you in back?

Lawn is fine for folk, less fine for anything with heavy low end. For Godwin I would take the lawn and the extra legroom.
