Electrician recommendations for an EV charger install

Owen Trask @smarthomeskeptic · CarySep 18, 2026, 5:02 AM

Just got an EV and want a proper 240V outlet or wall charger in the garage in Cary. The panel is 200 amp but I have no idea if there's room. Who has had a good experience?

ZAR Electric out of Wake Forest did our charger. They do a ton of EV installs and generators. Quick to schedule and the permit was handled for us.

Another vote for ZAR. They did a load calculation first instead of just slapping in a breaker.

If you want an old school outfit, Raleigh Electric Company has been around forever. They did rewiring in my 1950s house and were very careful.

Express Electrical Service came out for a code issue after our home inspection. Owner has decades in the trade and explained everything like I was a normal person, not a dummy.

Honestly, get the load calc no matter who you pick.

@deckdoctor did ZAR charge separately for the load calc or was it part of the quote?

Part of the quote for us. They looked at the panel first and gave us one number for everything.
