Scratching sounds in the shared wall

Chris Yandle @cul_de_sac_chris · WakefieldJul 28, 2026, 9:01 PM

I live in a townhome community in Cary. For the last three nights, right around midnight, I have been hearing a light scratching sound behind the drywall in my master bedroom closet.

It sounds like something with tiny claws trying to climb up to the roof. We share a roof and a fire wall with our neighbors. Before I contact the HOA and get sucked into a six month committee review of who owns the wall cavity, has anyone dealt with this? Is it mice or something larger?

Trevor here from Fuquay. At this time of year, scratching in the walls during the night is highly likely to be flying squirrels or bats. Mice are active too, but flying squirrels love townhome rooflines.

They find a tiny gap where the builder did not seal the vinyl soffits properly and they make themselves at home. Do not just trap them inside. If you block the hole while they are out, they will chew through your drywall to get back to their young. You need a proper exclusion with a one way door so they can get out but cannot get back in.

had mice in my attic in fuquay last winter. thought it was a raccoon from the noise. turned out to be three tiny field mice chewing on the flex duct insulation. ruin my insulation. check your attic hvac lines for chew marks.

first house, many mistakes

Oh no, mice are the absolute worst. We had a family of field mice try to move into the chicken coop feed bin in Rolesville last autumn. I ended up building a double walled feed chest with leftover plywood and hardware cloth.

Hardware cloth is the secret, Todd. If you do any sealing yourself, make sure you use quarter inch steel hardware cloth, not chicken wire. Mice can squeeze right through chicken wire, but they cannot chew through steel.

still researching

You city folks and your shared walls. Back out in Wendell, we just let the black snakes in the crawlspace handle the mice.

Todd, if you are in a townhome, your neighbor probably has them too. No point in sealing your side if the guy next door is leaving his garage door open all night and storing bags of grass seed against the shared wall. Talk to your neighbor before you call the HOA.

well and septic, no regrets

Sam has a point about the neighbors. In multi family housing, pest control has to be a coordinated effort.

Todd, look along the roofline where your unit meets the next one. Builders love to leave gaps in the flashing there. If you hire a professional for exclusion work, it usually runs about 500 to 1200 dollars depending on how many entry points they have to seal. It is worth every penny to get a guarantee.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I knocked on my neighbor's door and he admitted he has been hearing it too but thought it was my cat. My cat has been staring at that wall for three days.

I will get a local pest company out to look at the roofline before the HOA gets involved. I really do not want to share my closet with flying squirrels.

one and done
